(Bronx, NY) – Maritime College forward Waylon Lunn scored off of a rebound just over a minute into the second overtime, leading Maritime to a 3-2 win over Mount Saint Vincent in a game played at Maritime College. With the loss, Mount Saint Vincent falls to 3-5 overall and 1-4 in the Skyline Conference.
Lunn scored after Privateer forward Anuar Romero took the ball near midfield and beat the Mount Saint Vincent defense, setting up a breakaway against Dolphin goalie Martino Cecere (Rye Brook, NY/Blind Brook HS). DeCecere made a spectacular diving save, but Lunn gobbled up the rebound and fired the winning shot into the open net.
The deciding goal came only seconds after Mount Saint Vincent midfielder Garret Cooke (Kingston, RI/Bishop Hendricken HS) nearly ended the game himself, taking an outside shot that glanced off of the crossbar. The shot was the fourth of the game for Mount Saint Vincent to hit the crossbar.
The setback came for the Mount after a furious comeback during the second half. After taking a 1-0 lead in the 16th minute on a spectacular goal by forward Chris Herrera (Queens, NY/St. Francis Prep HS), the Mount seemed to be cruising until Maritime opened the second half by scoring twice in less than a minute to take a 2-1 lead. When it seemed like the Privateers had taken control of play, sophomore Eric DiFulvio (Queens, NY/Holy Cross HS) tied the game in the 77th minute. The Mount had several chances to win the game right up until Lunn's game-winner, but were unable to convert.
DeCecere had a solid day in net for the Mount, making 11 saves, and Mount Saint Vincent out-shot the Privateers, 27-21.
Mount Saint Vincent's schedule does not get much easier as the Dolphins continue their Skyline Conference slate on Tuesday when they travel to Farmingdale State for a 4:00 p.m. game
