Men’s Soccer now 0-2 after 6-2 loss to CSI Dolphins in 2006 home opener

MacDonald nets three points, Raftery comes off bench to make nine saves, Dolphins travel to Manhattanville on Wednesday

(Yonkers, NY) – Senior Chris MacDonald (Farmingdale, NY/Nassau CC) had a goal and three points, and sophomore goalie William Raftery (Bronx, NY/Salesian) came off of the bench to stop nine out of 11 shots, but the Mount Saint Vincent Men's Soccer team fell to 0-2 for the 2006 season after a 6-2 loss to the College of Staten Island during a game played at Mount Saint Vincent. The game was far closer than the score indicated as it was a near statistical draw in every category but the scoreboard. CSI outshot the Mount 26-25 and the time of possession was nearly even, but a run by the visitors during the first 10 minutes made for much of the difference in this game.

After CSI (1-3) opened a 2-0 lead after only eight minutes of play, Mount Saint Vincent struck back as MacDonald scored off of a Zachary Coppola (Staten Island, NY/Msgr. Farrell) assist to cut the deficit in half during the 17th minute. However, CSI struck back immediately, and then found the net once again just before halftime to make it 4-1 at the break. CSI extended the lead to 5-1 before junior Garret Cooke (N. Kingston, RI/Bishop Hendricken) stopped the bleeding in the 58th minute, scoring a gorgeous goal off of an assist by MacDonald and Chris Dotoratos (Bronx, NY/Salesian).

While the Mount Saint Vincent offense clicked for the first time this season, it was the play of Raftery that stole the show for the Dolphins as the sophomore entered the game with the Mount down 4-1 and gave the Dolphins a fighting chance. He made nine saves overall, five of which were from point-blank range to keep things close for a long stretch.

For CSI, freshman Drew Surmanek netted a hat-trick, while goalie Ronaldo Btesh made six saves.

Mount Saint Vincent returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 13 when they travel to Manhattanville for a 4:00 p.m. game.
