Dolphins Fall In NYU Tip-Off Championship Game

NEW YORK, NY – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Women's Basketball team was defeated by a score of 75-56 on Saturday night at New York University in the Championship Game of the 2008 NYU

Tip-Off Tournament. Junior point guard Lauren Percodani (Staten Island, NY) scored a game-high 16 points in the game on her way to being named to the All-Tournament Team.

With 19:25 left in the opening half, Mount Saint Vincent took an early 3-2 lead when Karissa Koerner (Bay Shore, NY) knocked down three free-throws. NYU would respond with back-to-back three-pointers to take the lead and never relinquish it.

The Violets held a lead as large as 16 points in the first half, but the Dolphins fought back to cut the deficit to 41-31 at the half on a Brittany Griffin (Suffern, NY) jumper with 1:04 remaining until the intermission.

Jen Mocanu (Middletown, NJ) scored half of her career-high 14 points in the opening stanza and also pulled down four rebounds for the Dolphins. Griffin and Koerner each went to the break with six points.

Percodani had a strong second half for Mount Saint Vincent that saw her score 13 of her 16 points on 50-percent shooting. She brought the Dolphins to within seven points with 14:38 remaining in regulation on a fast break layup, but the Violets responded with a quick four point spurt to jump back in front by 11 with 13:50 left in the half. The lead would get under double-figures just one more time in the contest.

Overall in the game, Mount Saint Vincent shot 31.1-percent from the floor, while the Violets connected on 40.4-percent in the contest. NYU forced 23 Mount Saint Vincent turnovers in the game and converted those into 27 points.

In addition to her game-high point total, Percodani grabbed five rebounds, handed out two assists and swiped four steals. Mocanu posted a team-high eight rebounds in the game and also added an assist and three steals.

NYU was led by a pair of players in double-figures with Jen Hum-Traverso pacing the Violets with 13 points. Bianca Storts chipped in with 12 points, while Jessica McEntee, a D3Hoops.com Preseason First Team All-American selection, posted a game-high 10 rebounds in the winning effort.

The loss drops Mount Saint Vincent to 1-2 overall on the season. The Dolphins will return to action again on December 2 when they open Skyline Conference play at Bard. Tip-Off for the road contest is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
