(Riverdale, NY) – Senior
Meagan Fitzpatrick (Yonkers, NY/Our Lady of Victory) scored a team-high 17 points and added 13 rebound for her third double-double of the 2005-06 season, and sophomore
Kaitlin Burud (Red Hook, NY/Red Hook HS) added seven points, nine rebounds, and a game-high three steals, but the Mount Saint Vincent Women's Basketball team got off to a sluggish start and were never able to fully recover, losing 66-48 to USMMA-Kings Point during a game played at Mount Saint Vincent. With their second straight loss, the Dolphins fall to 6-14 overall, and finish the Skyline Conference portion of their schedule with a 2-10 record.
Unlike previous games where the Mount played a stellar first half only to struggle during the final 20 minutes, the Mount slumped at the beginning tonight, falling behind 9-0 only three minutes into the game. From there, the Dolphins struggled mightily to shoot during the remainder of the half, converting only five of their 30 field goal attempts, and trailed 34-16 at halftime. The second half saw a turnaround as the Dolphins played USMMA even, but were unable to cut into the deficit created during the first half of play. Fitzpatrick was outstanding during the second half, converting three of her five field goal attempts, and grabbing seven rebounds, while Burud created all three of her steals and grabbed six rebounds during the same span. Overall, the Mount nearly doubled their shooting percentage during the second half, forced 14 Kings Point turnovers during that span while only turning the ball over six times, and were nearly even with the Mariners in rebounds during the final 20 minutes.
The Mount was done in not only by the slow start, but by poor free-throw shooting as well. Mount Saint Vincent shot a season-low 41% from the free-throw line (11 for 27), including a 7 for 18 effort during the second half when the Dolphins tried valiantly to come back and make the game closer.
Each Dolphin scored at least three points, marking the eighth time this season that every player on the team scored during a single game. The Mount also received outstanding efforts from Lauren DeRosa (Hawthorne, NY/Westlake HS) who accounted for eight rebounds and four assists, and Andrea DiNizo (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Masters), who added eight points.
Mount Saint Vincent returns to action on Thursday, Feb. 9 when they host Muhlenberg College at 7:30 p.m. The game will be the Mount's final home game of 2005-06, and prior to the game four Mount Saint Vincent seniors will be honored for Senior Night.
