Burud nets 1,000th career point as Mount Saint Vincent advances to Skyline Semifinals

Senior captain finishes with 16 points, six rebounds

Conference Tournament Quarterfinal win over Old Westbury. Burud was one of a pair of Dolphins to reach double-figures in the contest, as Ashley Farrow (Ocean, NJ) posted 11 points. The win moves the Mount to the Conference Semifinals for the second straight year.

After falling behind 4-0, the Dolphins used a 24-4 run to jump out in front of the Panthers. The run started on a jumper from Courtney Heesmann (New Hyde Park, NY) and featured a pair of three-pointers, one each from Ciara Clarke (Warwick, NY) and Karissa Koerner (Bay Shore, NY). During the run, the Mount was 6-8 from the free-throw line.

Old Westbury's Shannon Gilly would give the Panthers their first points in over six minutes when she converted a free-throw with 8:37 left to cut the Dolphins' lead to 24-9. Mount Saint Vincent would jump out to a 22 point lead, its largest of the game at 35-13, with 2:11 left in the opening period before Old Westbury reeled off eight straight to cut its deficit to 35-21 heading into the break.

In the opening stanza, Mount Saint Vincent shot .375 from the floor and converted eight of its 10 free-throw opportunities. Burud led the Mount with eight points at the break, while sophomore point guard Lauren Percodani (Staten Island, NY) finished the first with seven points and three assists.

After Heesemann put Mount Saint Vincent in front 37-21 with a jumper just out of halftime, Old Westbury closed to within six points with 16:47 left in regulation on a jumper from Shameeka Bryan.

Mount Saint Vincent would get its lead back to double-figures at 45-35 with 13:38 remaining when Farrow finished a lay-up. The Dolphins would get its lead to 11 points with 11:37 left in the contest when Burud converted a lay-up on the fast break to push the lead to 47-36. Old Westbury would not go away, however, as it would get to within four points on four occasions in the final 10:00.

The Dolphins were able to hang on for the win and advance in the tournament following a Burud jumper with 2:54 left to put the Mount in front 57-51 and a Clarke three-pointer with 38 seconds left to give the Dolphins the final 60-51 advantage.

For the game, Mount Saint Vincent shot just .386 from the floor but its defense held Old Westbury to .303 shooting and forced 17 turnovers. The Mount Saint Vincent bench played an important role in the win, as it out-scored its counter part 20-4.

Burud led the Mount with 16 points on 6-15 shooting in the contest, while Farrow reached her 11 on 5-7 shooting from the field. Heesemann finished the night with eight points and a team-high 10 rebounds, while Percodani chipped in with eight points and six assists. Clarke also finished with eight points after knocking down a pair of triples for the Mount.

Old Westbury was led by Shannon Gilly's game-high 19 points and Pamela Robinson finished with 15, nine of those coming in the second half. Gilly recorded a double-double as she also grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds.

The win moves the Mount to 21-5 overall on the season and sets up a Skyline Conference Tournament Semifinal match-up at Farmingdale State on Thursday evening. It the last meeting between the two teams, the Dolphins came away with a 73-68 road win. Tip-off with the second seeded Rams is set for 6:00 p.m. on Thursday.
