Final Statistics
Glassboro, N.J. – Senior Courtney Heesemann (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) scored a game-high 20 points and ripped down a game-high14 rebounds in Mount Saint Vincent's season opening 59-49 win at Rowan Thursday night. Jen Mocanu (Middletown, N.J.) also recorded a double-double for the Dolphins with 15 points and 10 boards.
Heesemann finished the contest 6-10 from the floor and went 8-9 from the free-throw line fo
r the Dolphins. She split her 14 rebounds down the middle with seven on the offensive end and seven on the defensive glass. Heesemann also handed out an assist in 36 minutes of action.
Mount Saint Vincent fell behind by six points early in the contest and did not score a basket until a Karissa Koerner (Bay Side, N.Y.) triple with 15:19 left in the first half. After falling behind by as many as nine with just under ten minutes left before halftime, the Dolphins ran off 10 straight points to take their first lead of the night on a Heesemann lay in with just over three minutes left in the period.
After Rowan took a one point lead with 2:07 left in the half, the Dolphins scored the final five points of the period, including a trey from Mocanu with 27 seconds left in the frame. The Mount finished the half just 7-37 from the floor in the first and 2-7 from distance, but held a four point edge after the opening twenty minutes.
Mount Saint Vincent ran out to an 11 point lead on a Mocanu layup 2:12 into the second half and expanded their lead to 23 points with a 17-5 run over a span of nearly six and a half minutes to take a 50-27 lead with seven minutes left in the frame.
The Profs made a furious run and slashed the Mount Saint Vincent lead to five points with a 20-2 spurt. Rowan climbed to within 52-47 with 2:30 remaining in regulation. The Dolphins closed the game by making five of six attempts from the free-throw line to secure the 10 point advantage and the win in their first contest of the season.
Heesemann scored 13 of her 20 in the second half and Mocanu netted 10 of her 15 in the final twenty minutes. Mount Saint Vincent rebounded to shoot just over 43-percent in the second half. Overall the Mount shot 29.9-percent from the floor but just 15.2-percent from behind the arc. Lauren Percodani (Staten Island, N.Y.) handed out a game-high seven assists for the Dolphins.
The difference in the contest came on the glass. The Dolphins out-rebounded the Profs 50-44 in the game, including 22-17 on the offensive glass. That advantage on the offensive side led to an 18-6 edge in second chance points.
Rowan was led by 16 points from Amanda Jennings who went 8-16 from the floor in the contest. Michelle Lala pulled down eight rebounds and added six points for the Profs.
The win pushes Mount Saint Vincent to 1-0 overall on the season. After a short turnaround the Dolphins will be back in action again on Friday at #19/23 New York University as part of the NYU Tip-Off Tournament. The contest is slated for 6:00 p.m.
