Burud, Koerner lead Women's Basketball past Old Westbury, 59-50 as Dolphins clinch #4 seed in Skyline Conference playoffs

MSV races out to nine-point halftime lead and never looks back; HVWAC playoffs this weekend, Skyline post-season begins next week

(Old Westbury, NY) - Freshman Karissa Koerner (Bay Shore, NY/Brentwood HS) scored a game-high 20 points and junior Kaitlin Burud (Red Hook, NY/Red Hook HS) enjoyed an incredible night with 16 points, eight rebounds, five assists, and seven steals to lead the Mount Saint Vincent Women's Basketball team to a 59-50 win on Thursday night during a game played at Old Westbury. With the win, Mount Saint Vincent improves to 14-9 overall, 9-7 in Skyline Conference play, and has clinched the #4 seed for next week's Skyline Conference playoffs. The Mount will host a Tuesday night game against either USMMA-Kings Point or Centenary, depending on the results of this weekend's action.

Thursday night saw two very evenly matched teams that would not give an inch, with the exception of a 9-0 Mount Saint Vincent run over a two-minute span to make a 9-9 tie an 18-9 Dolphins advantage. From there, the Dolphins led by as many as 13 points during the first half en route to a 33-24 advantage after 20 minutes, and the lead remained comfortable throughout the rest of the game as Old Westbury never seriously challenged. Koerner scored 11 of her points during the second half of play, and converted four of her seven field goal attempts from outside three-point range. Burud was remarkable, playing one of her best all-around games of the season, as was freshman Courtney Heesemann (New Hyde Park, NY/New Hyde Park HS), who scored 12 points, and added seven rebounds and four steals.

Overall, Old Westbury had the better shooting night and outrebounded the Dolphins 44-33, but the Mount forced 27 turnovers and committed only 21, allowing for the nine-point edge.

While the Mount has the Skyline Conference playoffs to look forward to next week, there is plenty of action before the tournament as Mount Saint Vincent is the #1 seed for this weekend's Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference (HVWAC) Championship Tournament and will face #5 College of New Rochelle at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday night at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York. Should the Mount advance, they will face the winner of the #2 St. Joseph's (Brooklyn) vs. #3 Saint Elizabeth game on Sunday at 4:00 p.m. at Pratt for the HVWAC Championship.
