New Rochelle, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Women's Basketball team built a 25 point lead in the first half, but unbeaten Farmingdale St. outscored the Dolphins 46-20 in the second period to
escape with a 69-68 Skyline Conference win on Saturday afternoon. Mount Saint Vincent had four players reach double-figures, led by
Courtney Heesemann (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) who posted 20 points and 10 rebounds.
After the Rams converted the first hoop of the game, Karissa Koerner (Bay Shore, N.Y.) pushed the Mount in front for the remainder on her first of three triples in the half at the 18:52 mark.
The Dolphins spread their lead out to double-figures on a Jill Brady (Rockaway Beach, N.Y.) triple with 13:08 left in the frame and the 11 point deficit that resulted for Farmingdale St. was the closest the Rams would get the remainder of the half.
The lead for the Mount would grow to 20 at 43-23 at the 2:54 mark on Heesemann fast break bucket and a three point play with 43 ticks left before the half from Brady pushed the Dolphins in front 48-23 heading into the locker room.
Mount Saint Vincent shot an even 50-percent from the floor and also knocked down half of their 12 three point chances. Heesemann led all scorers in the opening 20 minutes with 13 points to go along with six rebounds. Koerner finished the period with 11 points, going 3-for-4 from long range.
The Dolphin defense held the Rams to just 25-percent shooting in the half and allowed Farmingdale St. just one three pointer in 11 chances. Kimberly Blakney led the Rams with six points and six boards at the break.
Farmingdale St. opened the season half on a 21-10 run to slice its deficit to just four points with 7:25 to play in regulation time. The run was highlighted by three straight three pointers from the Rams.
The Mount would hang on to the lead until the 5:39 mark when Blakney banked in a triple to knot the score at 61. The Dolphins responded with a three of their own from Lauren Perocdani (Staten Island, N.Y.) to send the Mount back in front 64-61.
The Rams would not be able to pull in front of the Dolphins until a Tiffara Steward baseline jumper with 1:28 left in the tilt that gave Farmingdale St. a 67-66 lead. Blakney would knock in a pair of free-throws with 11 ticks left to push the visitors in front by three points.
Percodani got a clean look at a three in the final seconds, but it rimmed out. Brady secured the rebound and converted the jumper but the Dolphins would come up one point short.
Farmingdale St. rebounded from its poor shooting effort in the first half to finish the game at 38.3-percent after shooting better then 55-percent in the second half. Blakney scored 18 of her game-high 24 points in the second half and also posted four steals and 11 rebounds in the contest.
Heesemann led the Mount Saint Vincent attack by shooting 9-for-14 from the floor. She led the team with five assists on the afternoon and secured 10 rebounds for her ninth double-double of the season.
Percodani finished the afternoon with 15 points to go along with three helpers and a pair of rebounds. Both Percodani and Heesemann played the full 40 minutes for the Dolphins.
The loss drops Mount Saint Vincent to 10-8 overall on the season and to 7-5 in Skyline Conference play. The Dolphins will be back in action again at home on Wednesday night when they host Old Westbury. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
