After the Mount gained the lead on a Nick DiMaggio (Croton, N.Y.) jumper with 15:58 left in the first half, the Dolphins did not let go of the advantage until Patrick Bonna nailed back-to-back threes midway through the second half to give the Panthers a 59-57 edge.
The two teams would trade the lead from there and when Sean Caputo (Staten Island, N.Y.) drained a trey with 2:35 left the Dolphins held a 68-67 lead. Old Westbury answered with free-throws from Shane DeNully to pull back and front for good.
The Dolphins had chances to regain the lead late in the contest but went just 2-4 in the final 1:11 from the free-throw line trailing by three. Hakiem George converted two freebies late to send the visitors to the three point win.
After leading 36-30 at the intermission, Mount Saint Vincent allowed Old Westbury to score 43 points in the second half. Heading into Wednesday's game the Dolphins were allowing just under 30 points to their opponents in the second half.
Old Westbury placed three players in double figures with Lester Prosper leading the way with 15 points. He also grabbed nine rebounds and added a block. Bill Reese and George each chipped in with 13 points apiece. DeNully handed out a game-high seven assists to go along with seven points and four rebounds. Overall the Panthers shot 43.1-percent from the floor.
Miller finished the contest 6-9 from the floor and 4-6 from the free throw line on his way to the game-high point total. He also grabbed four rebounds for the Dolphins and was one of three Mount Saint Vincent players to pick up a pair of blocks. Pat Panetta (Ridgefield Park, N.J.) continued his strong season with 12 points and five rebounds, while Caputo totaled 10 points, three boards and two assists. George Naldjieff (Miami, Fla.) and Joe Ecock (Brooklyn, N.Y.) each also had two blocks in the tilt.
For the night, Mount Saint Vincent shot 24-60 (40-percent) from the field, but struggled from long distance hitting on just seven of its 21 attempts. Both teams struggled from the free throw line with Old Westbury going 11-19 and the Mount going just 15-25.
The loss snaps Mount Saint Vincent's two game winning streak and sets it back to 4-2 overall and 1-2 in league play. The Dolphins will be off until December 19 when they travel to West Point to play Division I Army. Tip-off with the Black Knights is set for 4:00 p.m.
Post Game Notes: It is the second straight game the Dolphins allowed an opponent to shoot better 40-percent from the field…43 points is the second highest second half point total the Dolphins have allowed this season…It marks the 91st straight game the Dolphins have hit a three pointer…It is the third game this season Dino Johnson has had as many as five assists and zero or one turnover.
