DiMaggio’s Career-High, Second Half Comeback Push Mount Saint Vincent Past Staten Island

After the two teams exchanged the lead four times in the first eight minutes of the game, Mount Saint Vincent went nearly six minutes without a point. Staten Island used a 17-0 run to open a 17 point lead with 6:21 left in the first half. A pair of free-throws from Shaquille Cunningham (Brooklyn, N.Y.) ended the drought, but the Mount would fall behind by as many as 18 four times in the first half. Mount Saint Vincent would trail 45-29 at the intermission.

Staten Island shot just under 54-percent in the opening frame and went 7-11 from long distance to open what seemed to be a commanding lead. Ryan Hennessey and Christian Montervino lead the way with 14 points and 13 points, respectively. DiMaggio led all scorers at the break with 15 points.

After shooting just 34.6-percent from the floor in the first half and converting just three triples, Mount Saint Vincent shot a blistering 62.5-percent from the field in the second half and went 5-8 from behind the arc, including 4-5 shooting from DiMaggio from long range.

The Dolphins came out of the locker room and quickly slashed the Staten Island lead to 47-45 on a 16-2 run that featured back-to-back threes and eight points overall from DiMaggio. Staten Island would not relinquish the lead until DiMaggio drained a pair of free-throws after tying the score at 65 with a three with 4:43 left in regulation time.

Staten Island would tie the score just one more time in the contest before the Mount closed with a 12-2 run to take the final 10 point edge. DiMaggio took over in the second half for the Dolphins, missing just two field goal attempts and going a perfect 6-6 from the charity stripe. He scored 20 of the Mount's 50 points in the period.

DiMaggio bested his previous career-high for scoring by four points on Monday and also matched career marks for field goals made and three point field goals made. He also added an assist, a block and two steals in the winning effort.

Pat Panetta (Ridgefield Park, N.J.) and Carson Miller (New Oxford, Pa.) joined DiMaggio in double-figures with 11 and 12 points, respectively. Panetta matched his career-high with five assists to go along with seven rebounds and Miller ripped down six boards and swatted a pair of blocks.

Staten Island finished the game shooting just 43.1-percent from the floor after going just 7-23 after halftime. It marked the first game all season the Mount allowed a team to shoot better then 40-percent against it. Hennessey led the way with 23 points and Montervino posted 20. Michael Ledbetter chipped in 10 points and eight rebounds.

Mount Saint Vincent finished the contest shooting an even 48-percent from the floor and an impressive 42.1-percent from long range. After taking just 28 free throws combined over the last three games, the Dolphins went 23-32 from the stripe on Monday, including 15-18 in the second half.

The win moves Mount Saint Vincent to 4-1 overall on the season. The Dolphins will remain at home and return to Skyline Conference action on Wednesday when they host Old Westbury. Tip-off at the Sharp Center is set for 7:00 p.m.

Post Game Notes: Monday was the 90th straight game the Dolphins made a three point field goal…DiMaggio scored 35 points in 31 minutes and did not have a rebound or a foul…The Mount bench outscored its opponent's for the fourth time this season…Mount Saint Vincent held Staten Island without a field goal over the final 4:03…The Dolphins are 3-0 at home.
