night at Old Westbury by a score of 71-65. The loss is the fifth straight league defeat for the Dolphins and their fifth in the last six games overall.
The Panthers led throughout in the contest and jumped out to a 7-0 lead after a tip-in from Garthlette James 4:16 in. Old Westbury held a lead as large as 14 late in the first period, before the Mount scored the final six points of the frame to pull within eight at the intermission.
Mount Saint Vincent struggled from the field in the first half, shooting just 33.3-percent (12-36) overall and just 22.2-percent (4-18) from three-point range. Old Westbury was also cold shooting the ball in the first, converting just 32.6-percecnt (14-43) from the floor, but it made two more triples and outscored the Mount by five from the charity stripe.
After a Joe Cooke (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) three ball and a pair of free-throws from Pat Panetta (Ridgefield Park, N.J.) the Dolphins had scored the first five points of the second and pulled to within 37-34 with just under 17:00 left to play in regulation time.
The Panthers answered with a quick 15-6 run capped by a Hakim George tip in to put the home squad in front 52-40 with 12:01 left in the contest. The Dolphins would close to within five points twice late in the half, but Old Westbury converted three free-throws down the stretch to secure the victory.
DiMaggio finished the night 7-15 from the field overall and 6-12 from long range to pace the Dolphins. He also grabbed five rebounds in the tilt and handed out four assists. Panetta recorded his second career double-double with 10 points and a career-high 14 rebounds. Eric Van Tine (Hawthorne, N.J.) and Tyler Muer (Goshen, N.Y.) each came off the bench to register 10 points for the Mount. Van Tine also finished with four assists, while Muer grabbed six rebounds and swatted a pair of blocks.
George led the Panthers with a team-high 19 points off the bench, to go along with nine rebounds and four helpers. Shane DeNully and Kris Afum each netted 12 points for Old Westbury (11-13, 10-7 Skyline), with DeNully and Bill Reese each finishing with five assists.
For the game Mount Saint Vincent shot 37.1-percent (26-70) and just 27.3-percent (9-33) from distance. Both teams struggled from the free-throw line in the game with the Mount going just 4-8 and Old Westbury shooting below 50-percent at 11-24.
The loss drops Mount Saint Vincent back to the .500 mark overall at 12-12 and moves its Skyline record to 9-8. The Dolphins will close out the regular season with a home game against league frontrunner Farmingdale State on February 21. Tip-off is slated for 1:00 p.m. at Hayes Gymnasium.
