Joe Cooke (Mount Vernon, NY) scored a game-high 26 points in the loss.
The Dolphins held a lead of 20 points twice in the opening stanza on Thursday and headed to the locker room with a 17 point advantage at 56-39. The Mount opened the game on an 11-4 run in the game keyed by a Cooke three-pointer and a transition lay-up from Matias Roibal (Boonton, NJ).
Nick DiMaggio (Croton, NY) pushed the Mount ahead by nine with 16:15 left in the half on a four point play that sparked an 8-2 spurt to put the Mount in front by 14 at 22-8 with 15:40 left before the intermission. The lead grew to 20 on a Randy Battle (Bronx, NY) jumper with 8:34 left in the half and then again on a pair of Cooke free-throws with just under 6:00 left in the half.
The Dolphins shot nearly 53-percent (20-38) in the opening half and dropped in 12 of their 15 free-throws. Cooke finished the frame with 14 points and eight Mount Saint Vincent players found their way into the scoring column. The Mount defense held Albertus Magnus to just 27.1-percent shooting from the field and forced 10 turnovers.
In the second half, the statistics flipped as Albertus Magnus outscored the Mount 58-41 in the second frame. The Falcons shot just over 41-percent from the field in knocked in five three-pointers, while the Dolphins shot just 28.6-percent from the floor and made just a pair of triples. Albertus Magnus got to the line 17 times and made 13 attempts, while the Mount was just 5-8 in the second half.
The Falcons opened the half with a 13-4 run to get the deficit trimmed to eight points on an Askew lay-up with 17:25 left in regulation. The Mount would get the lead back up to 15 points with 12:06 remaining on a fast break finish from DiMaggio.
Albertus Magnus would get its deficit to just two points with 1:10 left in the half on a three-pointer from Bobby Leonzo to make the score 97-95. After two missed opportunities by the Mount, Askew converted a pass down the middle of the lane on an out of bounds play to get the game tied. He posted 18 points in the second half to help his team get back into the game.
After Leonzo nailed a three to open the overtime period the Mount would tie the score at 100, but that would be as close as they would get. The Falcons closed the game out with a 20-9 run and converted 10 of 13 free-throw chances in the final 1:25 to secure the win.
Cooke scored 20-plus points for the fourth straight game in the loss, going 9-18 from the floor and 4-7 from long range. He also pulled down five rebounds and handed out two assists. DiMaggio finished the night with 23 points, six rebounds and a game-high six assists in 38 minutes.
Other strong performances were turned in by Battle who finished with 16 points on 6-13 shooting, Dino Johnson (Amsterdam, NY) who also finished with 16 points and three steals, and Roibal who chipped in with 10 points and four blocks off the bench in the contest.
The Falcons finished with six players in double-figures on the night led by Askew's 25. He also posted a game-high 12 rebounds, including eight on the offensive glass. Francisco Cordova and Leonzo each finished with 19 on the night.
The story of the game was on the glass Thursday night, as the Falcons held a 70-49 advantage in the category overall. The outrebounded the Mount on the offensive boards 39-12 which led to 48 points in the paint and 35 second chance points.
The loss snaps a three game winning streak for Mount Saint Vincent and drops it to 3-3 overall on the season. Next up for the Dolphins is a Skyline Conference contest at Mount Saint Mary on December 6. Tip-Off in Newburgh is set for 3:30 p.m.
