Men’s Basketball powers past Purchase 101-71

Cooke leads five Dolphins in double-figures with 18

RIVERDALE, NY – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Men's Basketball team picked up its second consecutive win on Thursday night with an impressive 101-71 win over Purchase at Hayes Gymnasium.

Junior Joe Cooke (Mount Vernon, NY/Fordham Prep) led five Mount players in double-figures with 18 points.

After falling behind 5-0 early, the Mount went on a 22-5 run to open a 22-10 lead with just under 10 minutes remaining in the first half. The run was started by a jumper from freshman Dino Johnson (Amsterdam, NY/Amsterdam) with 18:28 left in the period and ended with a lay-up from senior captain Derek Charlton (Yonkers, NY/St. Raymond's) with 9:56 left.

The Dolphins would open a 21 point lead, their largest of the half, with 3:10 left when Cooke knocked home a three-pointer to give the Mount a 39-18 lead. Purchase would cut its deficit to 14 points at 42-28 when Tyriq Harrington drained a pair of free-throws with a half minute to play before the break.

The Dolphins shot just under 50-percent from the floor in the first half at 48.5 and shot at an 80-precent clip from the charity stripe in the first 20:00. Cooke led the Mount with 10 points at the break on the strength of 4-7 shooting from the floor.

The second period belonged to the Dolphins, as they opened a lead as large as 33 points on two occasions in the second half, with the second coming with 1:45 left at 101-68 on a rebound and put back from senior Brian Chambers (Maspeth, NY/Cathedral Prep).

Mount Saint Vincent shot an even 50-percent (38-76) for the game and nearly 44-precent (7-16) from long range. The Mount was also an efficient 75-precent (18-24) from the foul line in the contest. 

Charlton and Johnson finished the night with 14 points each, while Kenny Widgeon (Plainfield, NJ/The Hotchkiss School) and Kevin Garlan (Jackson Heights, NY/Archbishop Molloy) finished up with 13 and 11, respectively.

Widgeon pulled down a game-high eight rebounds for the Dolphins, while Johnson contributed seven. Freshman Matias Roibal (Boonton, NJ/Boonton) had the best night of his young career, posting career-highs in minutes with 10, points with five and rebounds with seven.

Johnson handed out eight assists on the evening against just one turnover and swiped three steals. Classmate Patrick Panetta (Ridgefield Park, NJ/Ridgefield Park) also had a strong game, scoring nine points on 4-5 shooting to go along with five assists, four steals and four rebounds.

The Mount will head into Saturday's road contest at Farmingdale St. with a 7-9 overall record and a 4-5 mark in the Skyline Conference. Tip-off on Saturday with the Rams is set for 3:00 p.m.
