Men's Basketball team cruised to a 108-72 win at Bard on Tuesday night. Mount Saint Vincent had four players reach double figures in the game as it won its third straight contest.
Lastres shot 6-11 from the floor in the game and went a perfect 3-3 from the free-throw line on his way to a season and career-high point total. He also ripped down six of the Mount's 19 offensive rebounds in the game and capped off a solid performance with three assists and a pair of steals.
Freshman Randy Battle (Bronx, NY) continued his hot start to the season with a career-high 21 points to go along with seven rebounds and five assists. Battle was 8-20 overall from the floor but knocked down three of the four three-pointers he attempted. He was also a perfect 2-2 from the charity stripe. He and Tyler Muer (Goshen, NY) each recorded seven rebounds.
After Dino Johnson (Amsterdam, NY) scored the first five points of the contest, the game went back and forth for the first part of the opening half. The game was tied twice and the lead changed 12 times in the first 13:00 of action. After Matias Roibal (Boonton, NJ) tied the game at 26-26 with 8:26 left, senior Joe Cooke (Mount Vernon, NY) converted a lay-up with 7:01 remaining until halftime to put the Dolphins ahead for the duration of the contest. Cooke's lay-up ignited a 22-4 run for the Mount, as it took a 48-30 lead into the intermission.
The Dolphins increased the lead to 20 points early in the second half and it ballooned to as many as 38 points on a Ryan Brunelle (Carmel, NY) jumper with 1:43 left in regulation time. The Dolphins put 60 points on the board in the second period on 50-percent shooting from the floor.
Cooke continued his strong play for the Dolphins on Tuesday as he netted 26 points on 10-18 shooting. He also pulled down a career-high eight rebounds and handed out a pair of assists. In his first start of the season, Johnson converted six of his 12 field goal attempts on his way 17 points. He also handed out a season and game-high six assists in the tilt.
The Dolphins shot an even 50-percent (40-80) in the game and converted nearly 52-percent (14-27) of their three-point attempts. Mount Saint Vincent also shot 14-17 from the free-throw line in the winning effort. The Mount also dominated te boards on Tuesday, holding a 56-36 edge on the glass.
The win improves Mount Saint Vincent's overall record to 3-2 on the season and gives the team a 1-0 mark in Skyline Conference play. The Dolphins will open its home schedule on Thursday when they host non-conference foe Albertus Magnus. Tip-Off at Hayes Gymnasium is slated for 8:00 p.m.
