Men’s Basketball topples Yeshiva 70-56

Mount Saint Vincent grabbed the lead on a lay-up from Derek Charlton (Yonkers, NY/St. Raymond's) just over two minutes into the contest. The two teams would trade the lead, until there was 7:40 remaining in the opening frame when Cooke buried a three to put the Dolphins in front 17-14. That would mark the final lead change of the game.

Mount Saint Vincent would hold a 34-20 halftime advantage after shooting .484 from the field (15-31). The Mount would knock down four three-pointers in the half, led by Cooke's three.

Cooke would lead all scorers at the break with 11 points on 4-9 shooting from the field. Charlton added eight in the opening period, while Kevin Garlan (Jackson Heights, NY/Archbishop Molloy) came off the bench and chipped in with six.

The Dolphins came out and opened a 20 point lead with 15:21 left in regulation, when Charlton converted a lay-up off of a Yeshiva turnover. The lead would balloon 26 points with just over eight minutes remaining when Kyle Byrons (Goshen, NY/Burke Catholic) banged home a jumper for a 60-34 advantage. 26 points was the largest lead of the night for the Mount and it matched it twice in the final eight minutes of play.

Charlton would finish the night with 16 points and rookie Dino Johnson (Amsterdam, NY/Amsterdam) would round on the trio in double-figures with 11. Charlton added six rebounds in the contest, while Johnson pulled down five boards and chipped in with a game-high five assists.

Byrons grabbed a game-high eight rebounds on the night for the Mount, while Cooke added five. For the game, the Dolphins held a 39-27 edge on the glass, including a 9-8 advantage on the offensive side.

The Mount shot an impressive .510 from the field (25-49), including a .368 mark (7-19) from three-point land. The Dolphins owned the paint, outscoring the Maccabees 26-16 in the lane and 14-11 in second chance opportunities. The Mount forced 15 turnovers in the game and converted those into 18 points.

The win moves the Dolphins to 6-9 overall and to 3-5 in the Skyline Conference. After a day off on Wednesday, the Mount will host Skyline rival Purchase to Hayes Gymnasium on Thursday night. Tipp-off is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
