Dolphins End Five Game Losing Streak With 18 Point Win Over Sage

The College of Mount Saint Vincent Men's Basketball team snapped a season-long five game losing streak on Tuesday night with a convincing 91-73 home win over Sage at Hayes Gymnasium. Cody Gauvard (Rockaway Park, N.Y.) led all scorers with 20 points, while Carson Miller(New Oxford, Pa.) posted his fourth double-double of the season with 16 points and 11 rebounds.

til they pulled in front for good on a Filipp Bochkov (Moscow, Russia) three pointer midway through the period.

 

Bochkov's triple sparked a 13-2 run for the Dolphins that was capped by a Gauvard layup with 6:22 left before halftime to put the Mount in front 32-22. The Gators would slice the deficit in half after a pair of Mason Horne free-throws with 3:28 left in the period, but the Mount answered with 9 of the final 15 points before the break to carry a 45-37 lead into the locker room.

 

Mount Saint Vincent shot just under 49-percent from the floor in the first half and connected on four three pointers. Gauvard posted 10 points on 5-for-7 shooting in the first half. Miller chipped in with half of his 16 in the opening twenty minutes and George Naldjieff (Miami, Fla.) came off the bench to net seven points.

 

Sage shot just under 42-percent in the half, but would go just 1-for-10 from behind the arc. The Gators were led at the half by Horne and Marcus Hunter who each finished with 10 points.

 

The Dolphins pulled away quickly in the second half as they used a 29-3 run over the opening 6:20 of the period to pull out to a 70-40 lead. The run was sparked by a pair of three pointers by Shaquille Cunningham (Brooklyn, N.Y.), who finished the night with eight points.

 

Mount Saint Vincent would hold a lead as large as 34 points in the half and would not allow the Gators any closer then 24 points, until back-to-back triples from Alex King and Horne pulled them to within the final 18 point decision.

 

Overall in the contest, Mount Saint Vincent held Sage to 37.7-percent shooting from the floor. Hunter led five Gators in double-figures with 19 points on 7-for-13 shooting from the floor and a perfect 5-for-5 effort from the free-throw line. King contributed 15 points and a team-high nine rebounds on the night.

 

Gauvard finished the night 8-for-13 from the floor on the way to his fourth game of the season with at least 20 points. He also grabbed four rebounds in the contest.

 

Miller was an efficient 8-for-9 from the floor for the Dolphins and picked up the game-high total in rebounds with his 11. He also blocked a pair of shots, handed out an assist and swiped a steal. Also having a strong game on the block was Naldjieff who finished with 11 points, seven rebounds and a pair of blocks.

 

Eric Van Tine (Hawthorne, N.J.) came off the bench to net 11 points for the Mount and Sean Caputo (Staten Island, N.Y.) knocked down a pair of threes on his way to eight points. Caputo also handed out four assists and he and Cunningham combined for 11 of the Mount's 18 helpers.

 

The win pushes Mount Saint Vincent to 8-12 overall on the season and to 5-11 against Skyline Conference opponents. The Dolphins will look to stay in the win column on Thursday night when they host Purchase. The game at Hayes Gymnasium will tip-off at 7:00 p.m.
