ATLANTA, GA – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Men's Basketball team dropped an 80-66 decision to Christopher Newport on Sunday evening in the consolation game of the Stormy Petrel Classic hosted by Oglethorpe University. The Dolphins put four players in double-figures, led by
Dino Johnson (Amsterdam, NY/Amsterdam) and
Kenneth Widgeon (Plainfield, NJ/.The Hotchkiss School) who each posted career-highs.
For the second straight game, Widgeon improved his career-high, scoring 12 points on Sunday. He shot 5-11 from the field and grabbed five rebounds in the contest. Johnson shot 5-10 from the floor, including 3-7 from three-point range on his way to a career-best 17 points.
Joining Johnson and Widgeon in double-figures on Sunday were Kevin Garlan (Jackson Heights, NY/Archbishop Molloy) with 11 points and Kyle Byrons (Goshen, NY/Burke Catholic) with 10. Garlan added three steals and three rebounds in the game, while Byrons grabbed a team best seven boards, handed out two assists and swiped a pair of steals.
Senior captain Derek Charlton (Yonkers, NY/St. Raymond's) grabbed six rebounds in the contest and led the team with three assists and four steals.
For the game, the Dolphins shot 34.7 percent from the field, which includes 4-17 from behind the three-point arc. The Dolphins converted 12-22 from the free-throw line and held the advantage in points in the paint at 38-28 and second chance opportunities 17-8.
Christopher Newport held the advantage in rebounds 44-35 in the game and had four players in double-figures, including Theo Baker who finished with a game-high 18 points.
The loss marks Mount Saint Vincent's fifth straight and drops it to 3-6 overall. The Dolphins will return to play on January 4 with a road game at Westfield State. Tip-Off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
