Mount Saint Vincent fell behind by seven in the early going on Thursday, but used an 8-0 run highlighted by three pointers from Joe Ecock (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Sean Caputo (Staten Island, N.Y.) to pull in front 10-9 with 15:35 left in the first half.
After trading the lead four times from that point the Mount pulled in front by its largest margin of the game after another Caputo triple moved it in front by six at 19-13 with just under 12 minutes remaining until halftime.
Purchase then rallied to score the next nine points to pull in front for good on the night. The run was highlighted by a pair of Michael McNair three point field goals. The Dolphins would keep the deficit under double-digits until the 1:25 mark of the half when Kevin Major converted a layup to move the Panthers up 44-33.
The lead would grow to 14 points twice in the final 1:20 and the Dolphins headed to the locker room down 50-36 after a Marc Baclija triple with 20 seconds left in the period.
Purchase shot a blistering 57.6-percent from the floor in the opening 20 minutes, including an even 50-percent from long distance. The Panthers also outscored the Dolphins 8-2 from the charity stripe. Marvin Billups and Charles Thompson led all scorers at the break with 10 points apiece.
The Purchase lead never fell below double-digits in the second half and grew to as many as 25 points on three occasions in the final 1:50. Billups scored 19 of his game-high 29 points in the frame on 4-7 shooting from the floor and 11-13 shooting from the line. Justin Walter aided the Purchase attack in the second period with 10 points.
For Mount Saint Vincent Guavard posted 20 of his 26 points in the second half. He was 5-9 from the floor in the stanza and 10-13 from the free-throw line. For the game he finished 8-14 from the field and 10-15 from the line. He turned in a double-double with a team-high 11 rebounds and also picked up two steals and a blocked shot.
Miller finished 5-8 from the floor for the Dolphins and also recorded four boards and a block. Ecock knocked down a pair of three pointers for the Mount on his way to eight points to go along with five rebounds and a pair of assists. Sophomore Eric Van Tine (Hawthorne, N.J.) came off the bench to score six points and hand out a team-high three assists.
For the game Mount Saint Vincent shot 43.5-percent from the floor but just 20.8-percent from three point range. The Mount was also outscored by 17 at the free-throw line. Purchase became the first team all season to shoot better then 50-percent from the floor against the Dolphins and it also converted 88.1-percent of its free-throw chances.
The loss is Mount Saint Vincent's second straight and third in its last five contests. The Dolphins fall back to .500 on the season at 6-6 and drop to 3-5 in league play. The Mount will be back in action again on Saturday afternoon when it travels to Maritime. Tip-off with the Privateers is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
