Men's Basketball felled by second-half rally by Mariners, 87-66

Owens scores career-high 21 points, Britz nets 12 off the bench; Dolphins return home on Saturday

(Kings Point, NY) - Freshman Lester Owens (Manalapan, NJ/St. Joseph's - Metuchen) scored a career-high 21 points on 7 for 12 shooting, and four total Dolphins scored in double figures, but the Mount Saint Vincent Men's Basketball team lost an 87-66 Skyline Conference match-up to USMMA-Kings Point on Thursday night during a game played at USMMA. With the loss, Mount Saint Vincent falls to 1-14 overall and 0-7 in Skyline Conference play.

The game was a tale of two halves as the Dolphins came out slugging as they shot 41% during the first half, outrebounded the Mariners 22-19 during the first 20 minutes, but trailed 35-28 at halftime. The difference early was that the Mount turned the ball over nine times compared to Kings Point's four. Owens scored eight first-half points, while junior Derek Charlton (Yonkers, NY/St. Raymonds) and freshman Kevin Garlan (Jackson Heights, NY/Archbishop Molloy) each grabbed five rebounds during the stretch.

Kings Point, however, had one of their best shooting efforts of the year during the final 20 minutes, converting 73% of their field goal attempts (19 for 26), including a 6 for 7 stretch from three-point range. While Mount Saint Vincent shot a solid 46% during the second half, USMMA was on fire and outscored the Dolphins 52-38 to earn the win. Overall, each team grabbed 32 rebounds and neither struggled with turnovers, the difference was the USMMA shooters had one of their finest nights of the season as the Mariners converted 53% for the game.

Garlan finished with 11 points and seven rebounds, and junior Charlie Britz (Armonk, NY/Byram Hills HS) scored 12 points on 6 for 7 shooting.

Mount Saint Vincent returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 20 when they host St. Joseph's (LI) at 1:00 p.m.
