Derek Charlton (Yonkers, NY/St. Raymond's) netted his third consecutive double-double with 20 points and 12 rebounds, and freshman
P.J. Ratzke (Riverhead, NY/Riverhead HS) scored a career-high 13 points on 5 for 7 shooting, but the Mount Saint Vincent Men's Basketball team fell to Maritime College in the 'Battle of the Bronx' on Saturday afternoon, 83-72. With the loss, Mount Saint Vincent is now 1-12 overall and 0-5 in Skyline Conference play.
The early going proved to be positive for the Mount as the Dolphins commanded much of the first half, and led by as many as 12 - 38-26 with 4:50 remaining in the opening half. However, a late Maritime rally made the game close and the Mount led 43-38 after 20 minutes. The first half saw Charlton score 12 points, while freshman Kevin Garlan (Jackson Heights, NY/Archbishop Molloy) scored all 14 of his points, and fellow freshman Lester Owens (Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan HS) registered six assists during the span. The Dolphins shot an outstanding 56% from the floor during the first half of play.
The second half proved to be a different story as Maritime (2-12, 1-4 Skyline Conference) mounted a comeback that saw the Privateers take the lead for the first time with 13 minutes remaining in the game. However, Mount Saint Vincent kept things close until the final eight minutes of play when Maritime went on a 15-4 run to put the Privateers ahead 75-62 with 5:46 remaining in the game. From there, Maritime kept the Dolphins at bay the rest of the game. The Privateers shot 59% during the second half while Mount Saint Vincent shot only 39%, allowing Maritime to outscore the Dolphins 45-29 during the final 20 minutes. Maritime also outrebounded the Mount 38-32 for the game.
Also enjoying a fine game for the Mount was freshman Eric Lastres (Bayside, NY/Archbishop Molloy), who broke double-digits in scoring for the first time in his career, scoring 12 points on 5 for 9 shooting.
Mount Saint Vincent returns to action on Tuesday, Jan. 16 when they travel to Stevens for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off.
