Dolphins sink USMMA - Kings Point, 82-77 in Men's Basketball

Casey scores career-high 26 points, Hernandez nets second triple-double of 2005-06, Dolphins now 5-9, 3-4 Skyline Conference

(Riverdale, NY) – The Mount Saint Vincent Men's Basketball season is officially on track. 48 hours after ending a seven-game losing streak, the Dolphins jumped right back into the Skyline Conference playoff hunt with a stunning 82-77 win over USMMA - Kings Point during a game played at Mount Saint Vincent. Senior Greg Casey (Mount Vernon, NY/Blessed Sacrament) scored a career-high 26 points and fellow senior Charles Hernandez (Bronx, NY/Msgr. Scanlan) added his third triple-double of the 2005-06 season as the Dolphins won their second consecutive game. The Mount is now 5-9 overall and 3-4 in the Skyline Conference.

After Kings Point (5-5, 0-1 Skyline Conference) opened up a 10-3 lead, Mount Saint Vincent came storming back, thanks to Casey's finest game of his career, and a 12-0 run gave the Mount a lead they held for nearly 25 minutes. After averaging 18 points per game during an outstanding three-game stretch last week, Casey scored 20 points on 8 for 9 shooting during the first half alone, and scored 26 points for the first time in his career. Casey finished the game 10 for 14 from the floor, including 3 for 5 from three-point range, and added seven rebounds and six assists.

After a long stretch in which Mount Saint Vincent held the lead, including a 42-36 Dolphin lead at halftime, USMMA battled back for a 47-46 lead with 16:06 remaining in the game, but an 18-6 run over a six-minute span put the Mount ahead for good. The last time the two teams met on Dec. 2, 2004 it was a completely diffferent story as the Mount fell 96-59 to King's Point.

The difference this time around was the inspired play of Casey and Hernandez. With King's Point zeroing in on Mount Saint Vincent senior James Mooney (Bronx, NY/Iona Prep) the entire game, Casey found himself wide open for much of the first half. The Mariners countered to stop Casey to begin the second half, and Hernandez took over and was simply incredible, scoring 19 points, and adding 11 rebounds and 10 assists. Hernandez had the first two triple-doubles of his career during consecutive games on Nov. 30 and Dec. 3, but his effort – particularly during the second half – almost single-handedly put Mount Saint Vincent right back in the Skyline Conference playoff picture. He scored all 19 of his points during the second half of play, and connected on three of his four free throw attempts during the final minute of play.

Also for Mount Saint Vincent, Mooney scored 14 points. For Kings Point, senior Zach Wyatte (Camp Hill, PA/Trinity) had a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 15 rebounds, and Brian Kelly (Belle Harbor, NY/Archbishop Molloy) added a team-high 16 points. The Mariners had four players score in double figures.

Mount Saint Vincent returns to action on Thursday, Jan. 12 when they travel to Polytechnic for a 7:00 p.m. non-conference game.
