Freshman
Marquise King's (Albany, NY/Albany HS) three-point attempt at the buzzer rattled in and out of the basket, giving Centenary College a 76-74 win over Mount Saint Vincent on Wednesday night during a game played at Mount Saint Vincent. During an incredible game that featured eight ties and 15 lead changes, Centenary scored the win in the final seconds as Centenary's
Kyle Warner (Severn, MD/Annapolis HS) hit a jumper with 0:03 seconds remaining in the game to give the Cyclones the lead. After a time-out, Mount Saint Vincent's long in-bounds pass was tipped out of bounds by Centenary, giving the Dolphins one final shot at a tie or win. The in-bounds pass to King was perfect, but King's long jumper barely missed allowing Centenary to improve to 2-4 and 1-1 in Skyline Conference play, while Mount Saint Vincent falls to 1-6 overall and 0-2 in Skyline Conference play.
The early going seemed like it was going to be all Mount Saint Vincent as the Dolphins quickly opened a 10-2 lead and led 24-17 with 7:40 remaining in the opening stanza, but a 10-2 Cyclone run gave them a 27-26 lead. The Dolphins led 32-30 with just over a minute remaining in the first half, but Centenary scored the final seven points of the opening half to take a 37-32 lead ... and the tone was set for the rest of the game.
The Cyclones tried to pull away midway through the second half and led 66-57 with 6:50 remaining in the game, but an 11-0 run by Mount Saint Vincent put the Dolphins ahead and set up the dramatic finish. King put the Dolphins up 74-72 with 1:35 remaining with a lay-up, but a foul off of a steal put Cyclone sophomore Alex Kuchar (Rutherford, NJ/Rutherford HS) at the line for two free throws, and he converted both for his game-high 22nd and 23 points of the game, and tied the score. King had a chance to put the Mount in the lead with less than 30 seconds remaining, but his shot fell short, and a Centenary rebound put the Cyclones in a position to win the game with the final shot. Kuchar dribbled the ball past mid-court and into the Centenary set offense and tried to penetrate the Dolphin defense. His effort was thwarted, but a Mount Saint Vincent double-team left Warner open near the free throw line. The Cyclone guard dribbled left and then pulled up and hit a jump shot for the win.
King scored 15 points during a tough shooting night, but the story for the Mount was the play of sophomore Tim Biolsi (Bronx, NY/Cardinal Spellman). Biolsi - who had been plagued by shooting troubles during the early part of the season - scored a season-high 18 points on 7 for 10 shooting, and he also added two assists and three steals. Also for the Mount, junior Derek Charlton (Yonkers, NY/St. Raymond's) scored 14 points on 6 for 9 shooting and added nine rebounds.
For Centenary, who won their first Skyline Conference game since an 86-85 overtime win over Yeshiva on Jan. 26, 2004, Kuchar had three assists and two blocks to go with his 23 points, Warner chipped in 14 points, five rebounds, and four steals, and junior Kyle Boone (Hopatcong, NJ/Hopatcong HS) added 13 points, nine assists, and five rebounds. The win also gave Head Coach Andy DeStephano his first Skyline Conference win at the Centenary helm.
Mount Saint Vincent returns to action on Saturday, Dec. 9 when they host defending Skyline Conference champion Farmingdale State at 1:00 p.m. The game will be the Mount's last of 2006.
