Men's Basketball loses Classic Duel with Skyline rival Macs

Dolphins swap lead throughout the game but could not hold on, Charlton: 11 points, six rebounds, four steals

(Riverdale, NY) - Junior Derek Charlton (Yonkers, NY/St. Raymond's) scored 11 points and added team-highs in rebounds (six) and steals (four), and freshman Marquise King (Albany, NY/Albany HS) scored a game-high 35 points on 14 for 20 shooting, but the Mount Saint Vincent Men's Basketball team lost 88-78 to Yeshiva on Saturday night during a game played in front of a packed house at Mount Saint Vincent.  With the loss, the Dolphins fall to 1-5 overall and 0-1 in Skyline Conference play.

Playing against a bigger, more experienced Yeshiva squad, Mount Saint Vincent survived a remarkable shooting half for Yeshiva during the first 20 minutes of play as the Macs shot 74% in the first half but led only 42-41 at halftime. Much of the reason for the tight first half was the play of the Dolphin defense. Despite Yeshiva's success from the floor, Mount Saint Vincent forced an uncharacteristic 10 Mac turnovers that led to 18 Dolphin points during the first half. King had 18 points at halftime, and freshman Justin Baylosis (East Rockaway, NY/Archbishop Molloy) scored all nine of his points during the first half of play.

The second half turned into a thriller as the Mount and Yeshiva went back and fourth until the final five minutes of play. A lay-up by Charlton at 4:51 tied the score at 76, but Yeshiva finished the game on a 12-2 run as Mount Saint Vincent went 0 for 4 from the floor during the stretch but Yeshiva hit all five of their field goal attempts. Overall, Yeshiva shot 61% from the floor and held a 30-20 rebounding advantage. Mac center Shuki Merlis scored a career-high 24 points on 11 for 16 shooting, and five Macs scored in double-digits.

Mount Saint Vincent shot 55% from the floor and hit eight of their 16 three-points attempts.

Mount Saint Vincent returns to action on Wednesday, Dec. 6 when they host Centenary College at 8:00 p.m.
