Four Dolphins score in double figures, but Men’s Basketball falls to Hawks 99-80

(Riverdale, NY) – Junior Derek Charlton (Yonkers, NY/St. Raymond's) scored 17 points and added a team-high eight rebounds, and freshman Marquise King (Albany, NY/Albany HS) added 17 points and a career-high six steals, but the Mount Saint Vincent Men's Basketball team fell to 1-3 with a 99-80 loss to CUNY powerhouse Hunter College on Monday night during a game played at Mount Saint Vincent. The game was the first of two contests against CUNY competition to start the week as Mount Saint Vincent travels to Lehman College on Wednesday.

The first half was a competitive affair as both teams enjoyed a lead at one point and Hunter (3-1) led by the narrowest of margins, 47-44 at halftime, against an upstart, young Mount Saint Vincent team that seemed energized against one of the toughest opponents on their schedule. The second half, however was a different story as the Hawks' three-point shooting ability took over. Hunter connected for 15 three-point baskets on 30 attempts, including a 9 for 18 performance from beyond the three-point arc during the final 20 minutes of play to pull ahead late in the game. Hunter's prowess from the outside was evident when they hit four three-pointers in a row during a 15-2 run midway through the second half that extended a 60-57 edge into a 73-59 lead, and the Hawks never looked back. Hunter also converted seven of their eight free throw attempts during the final four minutes of play to ice the game.

Mount Saint Vincent, on the other hand sank only five of their 20 three-point attempts as King went 2 for 10 from three-point range during a tough shooting night. The Dolphins converted only 40% of their field goal attempts, while Hunter went 51% from the floor. Mount Saint Vincent was also 21 for 34 from the free throw line while the Hawks went 18 for 25.

The Dolphin bright spot was inside as Mount Saint Vincent enjoyed a 45-40 rebounding advantage as seven different Dolphins registered at least two boards. Charlton led the way with eight while sophomore Charlie Britz (Thornwood, NY/Byram Hills HS) and freshman Kevin Garlan (Jackson Heights, NY/Archbishop Molloy) grabbed six apiece). Garlan also scored 12 points.

After Wednesday's trip to Lehman, Mount Saint Vincent returns home on Saturday, Dec. 2 when they host Yeshiva University for their Skyline Conference opener at 8:00 p.m.
