James Mooney (Bronx, NY/Iona Prep) scored a game-high 37 points and added eight rebounds, and fellow senior
Greg Casey (Mount Vernon, NY/Blessed Sacrament) chipped in 21 points, but the Mount Saint Vincent Men's Basketball team fell to New England powerhouse Westfield State (Mass.), 96-77 in a game played at Mount Saint Vincent. With the loss, the Dolphins fall to 3-3 for the 2005-06 season.
The first half was incredibly tight with neither team holding a lead of more than seven points, and Westfield (4-3) led 41-35 after 20 minutes. However, the Owls made their presence felt in the second half of play, outscoring the Mount, 55-42. Much of the Westfield offense came at the free throw line as the Owls converted 28 of their 40 free throw attempts, while Mount Saint Vincent hit 13 of their 17 free throws. 20 of Westfield's 28 free throws were scored during the second half of play.
The Owls had five players score in double digits as sophomore Tony Collier (Colchester, VT/Colchester HS) scored 25 points and junior Curtis Gadles (Pembroke, MA/Cardinal Spellman) added 22 points and 10 rebounds. Overall, Westfield shot 45% from the floor, while Mount Saint Vincent shot 35%. The Owls also had a decisive shot blocking advantage as Westfield blocked nine Mount Saint Vincent shots while the Dolphins only blocked a single Westfield shot.
Mooney broke the 30-point mark for the fourth time during six games this season, and has scored at least 20 points in every game this season. He currently leads the Skyline Conference in scoring with more than 32 points per game.
Mount Saint Vincent returns action on Thursday, Dec. 8 when they travel to Old Westbury for an 8:00 p.m. Skyline Conference game.
